It got to the point where the whole world heard how a group of people, supposedly for Christian reasons, refused to participate in the census and buried themselves alive in the ground. Many liberal publicists, including the “mirror of the Russian revolution” Leo Tolstoy, used this outrageous incident to once again mock the “obscurantism” of the Orthodox.

The opposite statement is a superstition that contradicts Church Tradition and patristic teaching, for the mark of the beast is placed on those who consciously believe in the Antichrist solely for the sake of his false miracles (St. John Chrysostom). No external sign violates a person’s spiritual health unless it becomes the result of a conscious betrayal of Christ and a desecration of faith... Of course, there was never any talk about the TIN replacing a Christian name. Although it is obviously easier for officials to understand the affairs of nameless, numbered entities than the many-thousand-strong Ivanovs, Magomedovs and Goloborodkos. Well, whether the number 666 contains the same TIN and barcodes (the latter, apparently, does, and this is an obvious symbolic challenge to Christianity), the vast majority of officials are not interested. After all, if a person is just a function, then why complicate working with him? Number it and get to work!

The problem is in the very principle of digitalization in relation to humans. In dehumanization as such, which accompanies us today literally at every step. And if its beginning is in individual taxpayer numbers, and its logical continuation is in SNILS, then sooner or later human names may completely disappear from the document flow.

It would seem, well, let it be that what is Caesar's is unto Caesar. We know the names given to us in the Sacrament of Baptism, but we certainly will not call our relatives and friends by numbers. Yes it is. But another significant point arises: all this digitalization implies the creation of unified databases about each of us, and, accordingly, control over all of us (including financial, since sooner or later a single document will become a single payment document). It’s one thing if this is used by secular authorities who do not intend to infringe on the rights and freedoms of believers, and quite another thing if newly-minted militant atheists take advantage of it.

In a word, the problem of INN, SNILS and similar instruments, which critics have already hastened to call a “digital concentration camp,” is solely in the extent to which they will be included in the global system, which is an anti-Christian system. And also whether opponents of digitalization will have the opportunity to refuse to participate in it and continue to live “the old fashioned way”: with ordinary paper passports and equally traditional paper cash.

And it is precisely on the right to an alternative in relation to TIN, SNILS and other electronic innovations that we can and even must insist.
